SAFILO AND ELVIS PRESLEY'S SUNGLASSES: A TIMELESS LEGEND Padua, 22 August 2007 – 30 years after the death of the legend who left his mark on the music world, the Elvis Presley story continues in the glasses, objects and photographs related to “The King of Rock’n’Roll” displayed in the Guglielmo Tabacchi Gallery situated in the Safilo Group head offices in Padua. The 30th anniversary of the singer’s death was celebrated on August 16th in Memphis, Tennessee by tens of thousands of fans who gathered in Elvis Presley’s home town to pay tribute to his grave. The prestigious Guglielmo Tabacchi Gallery, a significant collection of antique and modern glasses, rare texts and instruments related to the optical world, has within its collection various objects, true style icons, that used to belong to Elvis. Elvis Presley represents a bona fide legend for several generations of devoted fans. For them his memory and music have survived the test of time and passing fads. Part of the Elvis charisma came from his totally personal style and the accessories that constituted an integral part of the King's look. Elvis had these very unique sunglasses custom made, just for him. One pair, made from silver plastic, has perforated metallic temples with TCB emblazoned along the side in white gold, while the bridge sports his initials, EP, once again in white gold. Another wrap-around pair, called "Renauld Aviator", features side lenses and was worn while filming King Creole in 1958. A third pair, in gold plated metal, once again sport TCB and EP in white gold. In order to really set off this prestigious acquisition, the Guglielmo Tabacchi Gallery has purchased other valuable items, such as a leather jacket, a collection of records, some paintings and a series of photographs that show Elvis sporting his fabulous "shades". The Guglielmo Tabacchi Gallery was started by Vittorio Tabacchi, president of the Group. Over the years he has been an avid collector of eyewear of all periods and provenance. His collection includes many priceless antique pieces and rare texts, featuring extraordinary examples of hard-to-find binoculars, telescopes, pince-nez, glasses cases and optical instruments.
